Sidewalks #4
The final comic in a series of older comics done for a local newspaper.
I know this is the middle of the week and I don’t usually post now, but I wanted to get this comic off my desktop. So here it is.
This comic takes place at Goodale Park, a park very close to downtown on the fringes of the hip Short North area. I used to take our dogs there often to roam around with other dog owners, but I haven’t done that for a while.
After I abandoned an idea involving food trucks that wasn’t really working, a friend gave me the idea of a lemonade stand. Much of this comic was the result of kicking around ideas at Stauf’s coffee shop with him.
I think Goodale Park would be a great place to set up a lemonade stand, although I’m not sure if it’s against park regulations or not. Goodale Park is just North of Columbus and is the home of ComFest, Columbus’s yearly community festival. I have only been once; a lack of parking and a sometimes sketchy crowd keep me away.
The fountain in the background is a hallmark of the park. Here’s is a close up look at the top:
And that’s it. Or at least the comics I still like today. It’s been fun looking back on this series that I did—back when I was still working with pencil and ink on bristol board. If you’d like to check out the rest of the series, here it is (oops! Two number threes):
Sidewalks #3
This is the third comic I did in 2012 for a local newspaper called Columbus Alive! as part of their Sketch in the City series, where local cartoonists took turns creating a comic for six weeks. You can find links to the others down below.
Sketch in the City: Sidewalks #3
This is another older comic from back when I was working on Bristol board with pen and ink. It’s from a series called “Sketch in the City” that ran in the shuttered Columbus free weekly “Columbus Alive!” Local cartoonists were given a six week run to do a strip related to the goings on in Columbus.
Old Comics: "Sidewalks"
In Columbus, Ohio, we used to have a free weekly paper called Columbus Alive! And in it they had a feature called “Sketch in the City” where a local cartoonist got a five day run to do whatever they wanted as long as it featured something local. This is way back before I moved most of my production over to digital, so everything was done on Bristol Boar…
If you’ve been enjoying these posts, consider becoming a paid subscriber. It helps me keep making comics, writing about the process, and sharing the kinds of ideas that don’t always fit into shorter posts.
Plus, you’ll get access to the full archive and subscriber-only pieces. No pressure—but I’d love to have you along for it.
